The beginning...

...of a new smile! Chloe got started with her braces two days ago. She was actually very excited to get them.

The night before she got them we discussed her loose tooth. I warned her that it might come out when they were making molds of her teeth. I gave her the option of having me pull it, but (of course) she refused. Imagine my surprise that night when she came up after she'd been in bed for a few minutes with her tooth in her hand! This little monkey pulled it out all on her own! I was so proud! We've had several major dramas trying to convince her to let us pull her loose teeth.

Chloe chose glow-in-the-dark elastics for her first fitting. They looked neon green at first, but once they were on they didn't look quite so bright. Here's one of those scary close-ups:
You can see her crossbite (what I've always thought of as an underbite) and all the crowding. The blue things on her back teeth are spacers. She has to go back next week and get her bands on. Then they will take some more molds of her top teeth so that they can make her palate expander. Fun, fun, fun! Actually, now that we've been through this with Sarah and I know how quickly teeth can change, I'm really looking forward to seeing all of her new smiles.

So is Sarah all done with orthodonture? Our previous dentist warned me on several occasions that Judy would need them, but our current dentist hasn't mentioned it. I so don't want to pay for them, but if she has to have them, it would be nice to know it could be over quickly.

Wow! I didn't know Chloe was even getting braces! Your orthodontist really gets moving on them. Tell her I think glow-in-the-dark bands are the coolest! Gram B

Our pediatric dentist mentioned at Jacob's last check-up that we should get him in for a consult with an orthodontist. I'm not looking forward to the costs either but I'm grateful that we can. I was born with straight teeth but even I hadn't been there's no way my parents would have spent money on braces for me. It always makes me happy to see parents spend money on braces to ensure their children can have a confident smile.

Aaron needed braces DESPERATELY but his parents didn't bother to get him orthodontic care. He went through 29 years of his life having a self conscious smile and almost doubling the age/wear and tear on his back teeth as a result. We found out when we finally took him in that our insurance would cover our kids braces but not his. So we got to pay for all of that out of pocket. It made me kind of mad and reconfirmed my belief that it really is something parents should take care of for their kids. Good for you and great for Sarah and Chloe!

Sorry for the monster long comment!
