Change Already!

I'm a little late in posting this, but we are finished expanding Chloe's upper palate. She'll continue to have her RPE (rapid palate expander) in her mouth for a year or so, but we no longer have to "crank" it. Here is a picture of her smile before.... and after 10 days of expanding...

He mouth expanded so much that the wire pulled out of her front tooth bracket! You can sort of see it in this picture, but I wouldn't look too closely. When I did, I noticed a bit of gunk stuck in her teeth. Ew. We had to clip it with Brad's wire cutters because she had a couple of days to go before her next appointment.

The plan is to also expand her lower teeth. That's good because right now, her teeth barely even meet. It is hard for me to figure out how she can even chew anything. Seriously! It's crazy! I even chose not to do the last two turns on her RPE because it was starting to worry me how wide things were getting. I want her to have space for her teeth to come in and end up with a pretty smile, but I don't want her looking different on the outside.

How do they expand the bottom?

Weird. I hope none of my kids need expanding. ;)

To expand the bottom they use wires that have coils or springs on them that push the teeth apart. At least that's what they did for Sarah. I'm wondering how well it will work for Chloe, the difference between top and bottom is so huge right now! I guess we'll see...

Wow, that is a major difference. I bet her mouth is pretty sore, eh? I remember when I had my mouth spaced out like that, I pretty much talked like this: "Tho, the red thox played thuch a good game today" I had lisp issues with that:) Chloe's smile will be so pretty!

IT will be so worth it! I bet that's hard for her to understand when it's time to crank. Good job Courtney, I would have a hard time with one of my kids going though that. :)

It was crazy how fast it worked. Weird....

So much nicer than having to have a bunch of teeth pulled though.
