A Trade

Today I took Sarah to the doctor to have a congenital mole removed from her back. It was big. And dark. And hairy. It needed to go. (Sorry if that is too much information!)

Right after she was born, one of the nurses noticed it and pointed out her "birthmark". I thought it was kind of neat (it wasn't big or hairy then) because I have a mole on my back (only kind of big, and not hairy) in almost the exact same spot.

As she's grown, it has too. A year or two ago I told her that if it ever bothered her, that we'd talk to a doctor about getting it removed. Last year, she said she was ready. We talked to the doctor and he said it could be removed, but it wouldn't be a "scrape it off" kind of job. It would involve cutting it out and then stitching her up. She would be trading a mole for a scar. We decided to continue to think it over.

This year, she was ready. And I agree. If it was me, I'd rather have a scar (which will fade and probably not be too noticeable) than a big, dark, hairy mole.

So today we went in. The whole procedure only took 30 minutes. They numbed her up with novacaine (or some other similar local anesthetic) and then went to work. She ended up with 4-6 stitches underneath, which will disolve, and 8 on the surface. Yes, a much bigger chunk was taken out than even I thought. She's achy tonight, but I think she will be okay in a day or two. Her stitches will come out in about 10 days. :)

Side note: I almost fainted 2/3rds of the way through. I don't know why, because I'm not a queasy type of person. But I was aware of what my body was doing and so I sat down. Totally lame - but not as lame as if I'd actually passed out!

That is a trade I'd make any day.
A few years ago, I sprouted a weird (not dark, but hairy mole) on my nose. It was terrible!
I had a doctore scrape it off when I was there for a more legitimate concern. So glad! Way to be a good Mom!

Way to be brave Sarah! I had a mole removed from my leg and they took a big chunch out, so I know your pain. I promise it will be better, and you can hardly see my scar.
love ya

I find it much more stressful and woozy-inducing to watch things done to my children than to have them done to me. I remember when Meg was five days old, and weighed less than five pounds, a nurse took blood from her arm (rather than pricking her heel) and seeing that tourniquet around that miniscule little arm just looked obscene. It made me sick to my stomach.

Hope you feel better soon, Sarah. Amy's birthmark has also gotten bigger, but no hair on is so far. What's funny is that when she was born (and she was also a tiny, five pound baby) it was right below her little bottom, but as her legs have grown, it has moved farther and farther from her bottom.

That is lame! Just kidding. I'm sure it's even worse when it's your child getting cut!
